Yakima Fork Lift Fork Mount Rooftop Bike Rack Review

Yakima Fork Lift Fork Mount Rooftop Bike Rack

The Yakima Fork Lift Rooftop Bike Rack is so far the best fork mount style rooftop rack that I have seen or used. One of the nicest features with this rack is that it mounts to factory cross bars as well as aftermarket round or square bars. It mounted very easily to my Subaru factory bars. The skewer mechanism is easily tightened and locked with one hand which leaves your other hand free to hold the bike steady or eat a burger. I also added the lock core to ensure that the fork skewer remains closed during travel. I spent way too much time comparing different racks but I am very glad that I purchased this one!

Yakima's first-ever fork rack with direct-to-factory crossbar capability right out of the box, the Fork Lift rooftop bike rack install on your vehicle with no fuss and no tools. The Fork Lift is equipped with a secure and lockable skewer with an integrated adjustment knob, making it easy to adjust the skewer with one hand (the SKS lock cores are sold separately). The easy-to-maneuver sliding wheel tray, meanwhile, accommodates several sizes and types of bikes--just position the tray under the rear wheel and lock it in place. Finally, the Fork Lift's sleek design and automotive finish looks extremely spiffy on your vehicle. Compatible with round, square, and most factory crossbars, the Fork Lift comes with Yakima's lifetime warranty.

Yakima FlipSide 4-Bike Hitch Mount Rack (1.25 and 2-Inch Receiver) Review

Yakima FlipSide 4-Bike Hitch Mount Rack (1.25 and 2-Inch Receiver)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This bike rack is finished very nicely with very few exposed nuts and bolts. It comes with anti-sway supports that fold down and attach to the vertical seat post tube on your bike and keep the bike from rocking back and forth while traveling.
It is also very well built but it has a few flaws that are worth mentioning. The integrated locking cable would be handy but it was VERY difficult to stuff back into its storage compartment (located in the vertical support arm) but your mileage may vary. The cable felt like it was longer than its storage space so much pushing and twisting was needed to put it back.
The rack is also very large and VERY heavy, much more so than would appear in the pictures. This could make it a bit awkward to install on your vehicle but it should be very sturdy because it uses a threaded bolt to attach itself to the hitch.
I also noticed that the provided lock for the hitch bolt wouldn't engage if the safety pin was in place. It works fine without the pin but installing the cotter pin doesn't provide enough surface for the lock to grip onto apparently. This could just be a flaw with the one I had so you might have better luck.
I never actually tested this rack with a bike because I wasn't able to install it on my car. The part that goes into the receiver hitch was too long for the hitch on my Honda so the locking bolt holes wouldn't line up. The Thule Ridgeline appears to be very similar to this model (and hopefully has a shorter hitch mount =).

Thule 912XT Roadway Hanging Bike Hitch Rack Review

Thule 912XT Roadway Hanging Bike Hitch Rack
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This replaced (well, supplements, as I might need to carry 4 bikes sometime) a old 4 bike Thule non-folding bike rack that was a pain because I had to take it off to park the Honda Pilot in the garage. It will fit my road and mountain bike at the same time. I now leave it on all the time with an old Thule hitch lock on one side and the bolt that came with it on the other; if you use the lock washer that comes with it, the bolt doesn't tend to work loose. I have no negative comments but it would be improved by adding day-glo colorant to the plastic endcaps of the bike supports (so non-cyclists who don't pay attention don't walk into them by accident) and some sort of built in padding on the vertical to prevent chipping of the back hatch of the Pilot when need to open it but you don't want to lower the bikes (right now, I have several turns of electrical tape wrapped around the vertical, just I have on the old rack).
I'd recommend this to a friend.

Heininger Automotive 2025 Advantage SportsRack BedRack Review

Heininger Automotive 2025 Advantage SportsRack BedRack
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This bike rack is a great buy for the money. It fits into full size as well as smaller trucks. Mine is a Tacoma and it fits perfectly. I do have to say that the directions for assembly are terrible but looking at the picture on the box and a little trial and error are all you really need. Be sure none of the pieces are still stuck together from the finish coating as they won't slide to adjust if you don't and this will make assembly very difficult.
I recommend using something to help hold the bikes in place during use as the simple device that holds the top of the tire is not enough to hold adult size bikes in place while driving. Mine are a Fuji MTB and a Redline cyclocross and both of them shift in the rack if I don't use straps to hold them. Not a big deal really. I do like that each tire holder is adjustable up and down for different size bikes. My kids bikes fit really well and tend to stay put for the most part unless I corner hard while driving.
The rack is held in place by tension to the side of the truck bed so you need to really get it placed well and centered before you adjust the fit. I have had no trouble with needing to adjust mine once it was set. There is also a heavy cable provided so that you can secure the rack to the truck as well as the bikes to the rack. I bought extra cables so that everything can be locked up together with the cables. It would be easy for someone to take the entire rack from the truck bed if it is not secured with one of these cables. The rack does not attach to the truck directly in any way. I liked that about this rack.
I gave it 4 stars because with just a couple of straps I can load all of my bikes and go to the trails and not need to re-attach tires or anything like that before I head out for a ride. It makes it easy to carry kids bikes which usually don't have quick disconnect front tires that many other truck bed rack require. The cost is very reasonable for what you get. It is all metal and is of decent quality. I recommend this if you want a truck bed rack that you can quickly load and unload a variety of bikes into without needing to remove the front tire.

Installed it basically to put 2 kayaks on top of the car instead of just one. Installation was pretty easy and it is nice the way it can be folded down for convenience. Handled the job just fine. Put two 15 ft sit-on-top kayaks on the TrailBlazer's factory installed rack with the Stacker.

Thule Helium 3 Bike Rack with Hitch Switch Review

Thule Helium 3 Bike Rack with Hitch Switch
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Over the past 40 years, I've either owned or regularly used about 10 different brands and types of bikeracks. While I can't give this rack five stars due to one minor problem, it is by far the best bikerack I've ever used or even heard about. I have it on the back of a 2006 Scion xA. (Did have to get a hitch put on the Scion, but this is very much worth it to be able to use a rack like this rather than some sort of a strapon kludge.)
As with all Thule racks (compared to several competitors), the stretchy rubber straps that hold the bike on the bikerack are easy to use, indeed even better than an older Thule rack I have on my Land Rover. (For instance, the Softride rack we have has straps and posts that are much more difficult to use.)
The posts that stick out the back are close together, so mountain bikes and kid's bikes fit on easily, without having to use the lower post of the bike as one of the attachments to the rack.
It really is light, though quite sturdy - you'll notice this especially when you pull up the little latch to let the rack come down so you can open the back of your car, or tilt it back up with one finger.
The integrated lock cable (locks with the same key that locks it into the hitch) is an elegant design. One cable comes out of the (as you look at it) left horizontal post, and another cable, with a lock on it, comes out of the top of the vertical post (yes it has a little cover on it to keep rain out of the lock, and the one in the horizontal post has a little keeper to keep it in place when not in use). You simply lock the two of these together (they're really quite short) over top of the bikes. This won't save your front wheels from being stolen, you might want another cable lock for that.
My only complaint is that, when I wanted to spread the saddles on the horizontal bar apart a bit to better accommodate three mountain bikes with lots of stuff on them (handlebar extensions, etc.), it was very, very hard. I do 250 pushups every morning and I couldn't get them to move by using my hands. I tried to use a large pair of Channelock pliers, which scraped up the saddle but didn't move it hardly at all. I then used an oil filter wrench, the type that has a length of nylon webbing that you wrap around the object (the saddle in this case), attach a 3/8" socket wrench. I twisted the saddle around the horizontal bar 2-3 times while gradually moving out or in as the case may be. That's really a minor problem, I figured I'll do this once and then never move them again.
Everything else in the installation is a snap. Everything is well-engineered, and you'll find lots of little details where Thule's experience and engineering expertise show - many incremental improvements over earlier Thule racks.
If I had to give this rack a grade using the US grading system, I'd give it an A-. I would give most of the other Thule and Yakima racks a solid B or B-, and some of them, like our Softride rack, a C+. And I was pretty happy with my Thule rack before, so this rack really raises the bar.
Final impression: best bikerack ever, if you just need to carry 3 bikes. Highly recommended, and worth getting a trailer hitch put on your car just so you can use it.

Thule 835XTR Hullaport Rooftop Kayak Carrier Review

Thule 835XTR Hullaport Rooftop Kayak Carrier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have a Thule Roof Rack on my '08 CR-V and this Kayak carrier fits on it quickly and securely. As far as the kayak, I have a 13' Necky Manitou and it seats very well in the J-hooks. The supplied straps for each J-hook and the two ratcheting straps for either end of the boat really help to secure it down.
There is virtually no movement when traveling over bumps and >70 mph on the highway. In fact, it moves far less than my bikes do when they are on the roof rack. Getting the boat off is a breeze too (assuming it's light enough and your car isn't too tall for you). You unlatch the 4 straps and lift the boat right off, takes all of 45 seconds.
As far as wind noise of the J-hooks when you DON'T have a kayak on the roof - you don't even need to worry about it. Each J-hook fits on top of the rack and a plate swings underneath the roof rack and gets screwed to the J-hook via a thumb screw. And that is the beauty of it... when the kayak isn't on the roof, you undo one thumbscrew, swing the plate around, take the whole J-hook off and toss it in your car/truck. Saves on gas mileage and noise. Putting it back on takes 1 minute. The whole installation and removal of the J-hooks is so fast that getting the more expensive 835PRO with the fold-down J-hooks almost seems useless. Why fold it down and have someone steal it right off your car (these do not have thule locks or any lock for that matter) when you can just take it off in 20 seconds and lock it in your vehicle!
For those worried about locking the kayak to protect from theft while transporting, I have seen specific "Kayak Locks" made for J-hook style carriers that wrap around the kayak and roof rack (which I'm assuming the roof rack is locked to your roof...it should be!). They fit snugly too so you can't lift anything off the rack to get at the J-hooks. They are around $50 or so but they keep your $1000+ investment secure!

Redesigned for improved value while maintaining great performance, the rooftop-mounted Thule 835XTR Hullaport Kayak Carrier maximizes load bar space for other carriers. It fits Thule square, Aero, Yakima round, and most factory installed cross bars. The 835XTR offers great kayak protection with adjustable foam padding, and it's easy to transfer from vehicle to vehicle with its universal mounting system. It includes ratcheting bow and stern tie downs, and two load straps with buckle protectors.
Manufacturer's Warranty It's backed by Thule's limited lifetime warranty. The warranty is terminated if the purchaser transfers the product to another person. The warranty does not cover normal wear and tear, cosmetic rust, scratches, or accidents.
About Thule To say that Thule's beginnings in the U.S. were humble would be an understatement. Founding member Ake Skeppner sold products at windsurf competitions on the New England shoreline, exhibited the product line at a number of different trade shows, and even canvassed local retailers in the greater New York area, all from his "office"--a now-famous station wagon. Initial success was found in the small but growing sport of windsurfing where a strong, reliable roof rack was an indispensable piece of equipment. This was quickly followed by success in the ski business where Thule's Swedish heritage certainly helped the product gain rapid acceptance.
By the mid-1980s, the company sold products directly to ski and windsurfing shops but sold through distributors to address the large and growing bike business. A risky decision was made to terminate these distributor relationships and sell direct to retailers through a network of independent sales representatives. Much of the company's market success today can be traced to that decision. Shortly after, Ake hired an engineer and set up a small assembly plant in Elmsford, New York in order to design and manufacture bike carriers that would offer the features demanded by the U.S. consumer and compete effectively with other racks on the market.
The company has since grown rapidly through product innovation, a commitment to quality, and the continuance of a strong entrepreneurial spirit as well as continuing to evolve their products to meet the needs of users.

I originally bought this item @ a local store, after going aha! all my tool storage problems solved. It was easy to put together and use, saving me tons of space. After a years' use the item seems to sag a bit more than usual and the base where the tools sit is breaking through more frequently. I guess what I need for my use is the same design in metal and fastened to the wall stud. Overall its a great design that is limited by the material its made of.

I wasn't too happy spending this much money on a bike carrier, but I knew the fold down carriers would be a real pain. I am VERY glad I spent the extra money. Assembly was a breeze and it fits easily onto the hitch of our Toyota Sienna (using a Hidden Hitch). All the mechanisms for folding and extending work great and give us plenty of clearance to access the trunk of the minivan. I also love having the hitch and bike locks integrated. Makes it much easier to manage and I did not need to buy any accessories.

Hollywood Racks F6 Expedition 3-Bike Trunk/Bumper Mount Rack Review

Hollywood Racks F6 Expedition 3-Bike Trunk/Bumper Mount Rack
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got the F6 3-bike Trunk/Bumper Mount Rack for my wife for Christmas. She had purchased a cheap bike rack a couple of years back that was a total waste of money (could barely hold 2 bikes, did not hold them securely, one bike damaged during transport, etc.) The F6 is one of the sturdiest racks I've seen, and the cradles work great at keeping them secure. Easy to install on my 4Runner (though the top bar has to either rest on the upper rear brake light or the top of the rear window - not to keen about that), a bit more problematic on my Buick Century (not enough flat bumper for the bottom rests to sit on). The main problem is that neither of our bikes seem to fit the "standard" way, and the modified method leaves only rooom for two, not three, bikes.
But having said all that, we can make it work, it doesn't take long to install, the bikes ride securely, and we feel it is a well-made product. I also was VERY pleased with the price we paid through Amazon, which was about half of what it would have cost us at our local bike shop!

Yakima KingJoe 2-Bike Trunk Mount Rack Review

Yakima KingJoe 2-Bike Trunk Mount Rack
Average Reviews:

Another reviewer found a theoretical flaw in the design and did not use the rack. I understand the critique, but I have used my King Joe successfully for several years with very expensive road bikes. The benefit, as I see it, of using one strap for two tension points is that it is easy to apply and balance the tension points. Unless a strap or buckle actually breaks (unlikely unless damaged), the rack and bikes are secure so long as the straps were placed properly (as easy task) and then tightened.
The rack is well-designed, sturdy and takes only a minute to place and remove.

Compatible with the broadest range of vehicles of any Yakima bike rack, the Yakima KingJoe 2 fits up to two bikes on the trunk of your sedan. Plus, the unit's premium tri-padded feet and metal buckles are expressly designed to protect your car's paint job. This product is straight forward easy to install as advertised. My roof rails are foolishly body colored rather than something more wear forgiving. The soft rubber mounts allow for tight installation and full removal with no marks left or paint abrasion.
The weight gives you confidence that it'll take the load. This sucker is solid.
If I had one gripe it would be that the gear for tightening/loosening requires too many turns.
If I needed a second set, I would not hesitate to buy another set.
