This was perfect for travel. Very roomy. I have 2 extra large suitcases that fit in it perfectly with extra room for all the beach towels and more. I used extra bungie cords just for my peace of mind. For the price you can't beat it. Well made and waterproof.

Highland 1039500 Black Rainproof Car Top Carrier and Duffel Bag - Pack of 2 Review

Highland 1039500 Black Rainproof Car Top Carrier and Duffel Bag - Pack of 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We bought these duffle bags specifically for vacation in the end of June 2006. We drove over 700 miles with them on the top of our car without an incident. We packed all the clothing for 7 days for 2 adults and 3 children, plus 6 beach towels and still had room for some other things. They are easy to pack and to close. They did get heavy and my husband needed an extra hand to lift them to the top of the car. The cover that fits over the two bags is easy to use and fits snuggly over the bags. We did not have any rain during the drive, so I do not know how well they hold out moisture.
When we got to the hotel, we unpacked the bags and they easily fit under the bed.
The bottom of the bag did put some minor scratches on the roof of the car, so I recommend putting a blanket under the bags.
After attaching the bags to the cross bars, we pushed the cross bars tight against the bags and one of the bags shows some wear from rubbing the bar. If the bag was totally full, this wouldn't have been a problem.
We were very pleased with these bags and would recommend them to anyone looking for extra storage while traveling.

This carrier is terrible! It ripped and broke during the first day of a cross-country trip. We had to rearrange everything to fit inside the car. Also, it is far from Aerodynamic. This destroyed our gas mileage. Save your money and don't buy this.

1998- 2010 Honda Odyssey Roof Rack Crossbars With Locks Review

1998- 2010 Honda Odyssey Roof Rack Crossbars With Locks
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Pros: Cheep, holds the weight.
Cons: Poorly constructed, locking covers fall apart, loud wind noise when not loaded.
Recommendation: only for rare uses. If you'll be frequently using this rack, spend the money on a better make and model.
I bought this rack for my 2007 Honda Odyssey to carry our 14.5 foot canoe. The box arrived damaged, and there were no instructions in the box. The shipper apologised for the lack of instructions and send me a link to an online video.
The first time I used this it was very frustrating. The initial set up involves adjusting several screws to get the clamps to seat correctly. The locking clamp covers are cheeply made and are very difficult to seat and lock once the clamps are in place. The second time I used the rack, one of the locking covers completely fell apart. The tumbler dropped all of its pieces and fell out of the cover. So after only two uses, I'm already down to three of four locking covers.
When not loaded, this rack has a loud hum from air moving across the top, even at city speeds. This may be common on removable racks, but the built in roof rack on our previous 1995 Mercury Villager did not have any audible wind noise.
Though I am disappointed in the usability of this product, I will only be using this rack a few times a year, so I'll work around the cheep construction. It does hold the canoe, though by the time I've installed the rack I'm pretty near my frustration threshold. If you will rarely use a roof rack, this may be a workable solution. If you are going to use it more than a few times a year, spend the money and get a better rack. You'll thank yourself later.

Highland 10392 Black KarPak Rainproof Car Top Carrier Review

Highland 10392 Black KarPak Rainproof Car Top Carrier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We've had the Highland Kar-Pak since our first family trip to Disney World in 2002, and we've used it many a times since: trips to Disney World, trips to Gulf Shores, a few visits to Texas and, the big one, our evacuation from New Orleans a few days before Hurricane Katrina struck. Not to be overly glowing, but this thing helped us save a lot more since we could cram it full.
It holds a bundle, stores quickly, cleans up easily (bug splatter is no match for scrub brush & water, eh), is arguably leak-proof (never had a problem even through the worst rains), and attaches easily and securely (and not to dismiss another person's review/opinion, but the carrier box clearly stated "Roof Rack Mount"; however, I can see confusion with roof rack and roof bars -- those bars on the roof when you get the van/suv/etc are just styling until you add a cross-bar).
My wife came across this model locally in N.O. when we were searching for something for the roof to carry luggage on our first real driving vacation. We had looked at a lot of the hard-side ones, which were all extremely expensive and sorely lacking in capacity. She found this and we thought it might be a quick-fix but we've used it ever since and have no plans to replace it.
FWIW, a tip: get some big safety pins. Though you can tie the excess strap up it's easier to use a safety pin to pin up the excess. You don't have to, but the excess strap tends to flap in the wind and will drive you a little batty.

Auto Expressions 223102 Roof Top Cargo Carrier Review

Auto Expressions 223102 Roof Top Cargo Carrier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We purchased this rooftop cargo carrier to transport our suitcases and beach items during our summer vacation to New England. We were initially concerned because it was so inexpensive for the size and worried that it might not fit a Trailblazer. Upon arrival we were pleased to find that it not only fit securely, but was rather stylish too. Although it appeared weatherproof we soon found that it was not. It began raining at the onset of our trip. About four hours in to our fourteen hour roadtrip the weatherproof lining began disintingrating. By the time we arrived at our destination all our possessions were soaked and coated in tiny grey vinyl flecks. This cargo hauler might be cheap and look nice, but it is not worth your money!

I bought this as a gift for my parents and they love it. It's just enough room for them to put extra stuff on long trips all over the U.S. to visit family and friends. They are in retirement mode now and will have a lot of extra time to take those trips and now they can do it more comfortably. I love that it works for cars without the roof racks and will work on small cars as well as larger ones. It was perfect for their needs.

Well it worked well. I cranked it down really tight but you have to play with the straps to make sure you don't get an annoying vibration whistle. The one thing they really need is something to put between the straps and the car. (It was a little rough on the paint job) When I was buying it I thought it was going to have gutter clamps or something. The straps run right though the car. Not a real problem but I wouldn't want to use this every weekend. It would really wear out the weather striping of the car doors.

WeatherTech 60001 RackSack Cargo Carrier Review

WeatherTech 60001 RackSack Cargo Carrier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I like WeatherTech products, so when I saw this one, I decided to buy it, and stop searching all the other choices. I like the WeatherTech Company, and they have a REP for perfect products!
After a trip from Ohio to South Florida and back, I felt I knew enough about it to review it and give some general info. So this is based on ONE long trip in the rain... (I am a retired truck driver, so have some knowledge in this area)
First, it's well made, it has it's own storage bag that yes, it really will fit back into!
Got the usual great Amazon service! Fast delivery, no damage, and lowest price I could find!
Soft or Hard - which to choose?
Here's my thinking on the subject: Hard is better, but much more expensive, and takes much more room to store when not in use. Since this is not an item I will use more than 2-3 times per year, cost and storage are big factors to me. If I were to use it more often, then a hard Carrier would do the job much better.OK - Soft, now why this one?
As I said at the top, I like the Company, and knew the product would be of great quality. I was right, heavy material, double seams everywhere, strong zipper, great attachment system!
A few things I learned during the study and search for this; if your roof rack has cross rails - you need to measure the space between them, or make sure they can be removed - if not, you will have to go to a hard Carrier! Because this is some 30+ inches long, you want this to sit on the roof itself, NOT on any cross-rails! On my 06 Tucson, there is only 21' between the rails, and it was a chore to remove them (on my Tucson, the cross-rails are meant to not be moved, and they had some extra parts built up around the rails that had to be removed first). So scope all this out first regardless of which soft Carrier you buy!
I do not believe that any brand of soft Carrier would be truly water-proof, so get past that, and plan for some dampness - that was my thinking! The racksack uses a "rubber-backed" type material (PVC, etc), but water *could* come in through the seams, or around the zipper. So, I simply used garbage bags around what we were worried about.
The straps can be used on the front and back, or on the sides - since I had removed my cross rails, I could only attach on the sides. YES, it's a pain to load - I am 6' tall - but not tall enough - so a ladder, or stand on the door edge in the open door, or, load on the ground and heave it onto the roof---not an easy way to do it. And NO, it must be unloaded at night for those of you on long trips as there is no way to lock it, another reason for a[...] hard shell lockable Carrier - But, I knew this when I bought it, just bringing up "gotcha's" that others may not have thought of.
Anyhow, the straps work very well! The buckles hold well, and I felt no need for any extra straps (hindsight proved me correct as well) - remember, loose strap ends will do damage if they flap going down the road! The racksack uses this neat velcro way of rolling the end, and self-tying the ends so they do not flap. If not, or if it does not work for you, simply tuck the ends under the bag - just make sure they do not flap.
Gas mileage will go down when at speed. If loaded properly, there is not much extra noise, but at freeway speeds, a drop in MPG is a real possibility - regardless of which bag/Carrier you get.
On my small SUV (Tucson) driving at 65-70 on the cruise control I normally get 22-23MPG, the best I did with the bag was 19.8MPG - so in my case, the drop was rather considerable! This is more a issue of the vehical than the type of bag used. On my car, I would get roughly the same drop regardless of which Carrier bought (the exception might be some of the streamlined hard Carriers).
To sum it up, I like the product, it worked well for me, and the luxury of being able to bring items on the car trip that I could not have taken without the bag was a good trade-off for the loading hassles and the lower MPG - so, this is both a review and recomendation of the 'Racksack' - and a how-to in general for roof top carriers.
If you'd like more info on the Racksack, Google the Company name and go to their website - lots of images and info on the product. Very good product for the price - was roughly 50% cheaper at Amazon too!
I hope this helps!

Waterproof Car Top Carrier- Fits Cars with or Without Rack - Includes Storage Pouch and Non-scratch Protective Mat Review

Waterproof Car Top Carrier- Fits Cars with or Without Rack - Includes Storage Pouch and Non-scratch Protective Mat
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We purchased the Roofbag from Roofbag.com to go onto our 2007 Jeep Compass (without roof rails). We were excited about the bag, thinking it would meet our needs, and drove from Chattanooga, TN to Dallas, TX without any problems. However, when we emptied the bag, zipped it up, and left it on the roof overnight - the storms came. The next morning, with a light rain continuing, I left the hotel to load the bag and found at least 2 inches of standing rain filling the bottom!! My "waterproof carrier - with special waterproof zipper flap cover" even thought it was zipped and closed!!! We poured the water out, dried the bag, and put non-clothing items inside for the rest of the trip (from Dallas, Tx to OKC, Oklahoma). Within minutes, it got worse. The straps that came with the carrier worked like sponges, soaking up the water and pouring it through the doors, leaving watermarks on the ceiling and showering drops onto everyone in the car. The straps were too large to fit through the slim holes on my factory roof rails, but an emergency stop to Wal-mart and a purchase of some nylon rope at least got the soaking straps out of our car. When we got to OKC, we took the stupid thing off the roof, folded it up, and put it in the trunk. After selling a few other items, we did without the Roofbag for the remainder of our 9-day road trip. My opinion? If you get the Roofbag, make sure it will strap to existing roof rails, and don't put anything inside you want to keep dry!
The kicker? Roofbag.com's warranty regarding their "waterproof carrier" - (From Roofbag.com) - "Since we have no control over how a user installs the carrier, and since the Cross-Country carrier only leaks if installed incorrectly, water leakage is not covered by the warranty, unless the bag has a noticeable manufacturing defect that affects its waterproofness." Classic.

Moved from Tampa,FL to Houlton,ME.
Pros: You can fit a ton of luggage in this thing. Left me with lots of room in my Durango. I filled this thing up with 6 large suitcases, filled it til it could barely zip up. Never had a problem with the load shifting once it was strapped in and loaded. I did however have to tighten the straps up every time I stopped for gas, not very much but it did loosen up a little bit. I don't know if it was because of the rain or if I didn't strap it correctly.(read cons)
Cons: If you want to keep your stuff dry you have to buy a liner separately. It rained every single day throughout my trip
and needless to say all my luggage was soaked along with most of my clothes. My fault for not buying the liner but not that big of a deal really, just had to wash everything over again. Also the straps were a bit confusing for me. Maybe I'm just a dummy. Took me a few minutes to figure out where and how to put the straps because the directions they send you aren't very detailed.
Overall I would recommend this item to anyone that plans to make a move and has quite a bit of luggage/cargo to take and wants to have the free space in your vehicle. I would STRONGLY suggest buying the liner so your stuff doesn't get soaked like mine did.

These roof rails worked great on my 2008 XC70. They were easy to install and secured the Volvo Weekender cargo box without any issues. They were also less than half the price quoted at the Volvo dealership...or compared to Thule's product on line. Highly recommended.

Rain-X 161040 Water-Resistant Roof Top Cargo Bag Review

Rain-X 161040 Water-Resistant Roof Top Cargo Bag
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We purchased this carrier because our current carrier, a hitch-based carrier on the rear of the car, put too much weight on the rear of the vehicle, making it hard to steer in wet or icy conditions.
The bag is made of VERY heavy vinyl-type fabric. So heavy in fact that it is hard to open, close, and zip. But once you get it worked out (I brought it inside to warm it up, which helped a lot) it is a nice accessory.
The straps were easy to lace through the eyelets, and although it was not detailed in the instructions how to lace them through, I was able to work it out in no time. Instructions could have been clearer.
The zippers are very heavy duty, but because the fabric is so heavy they are difficult to open or close. I believe this is a function of the fabric being water resistant. I found myself trying to stretch the creases / folds out of the fabric in order to pull the zipper. Even a TINY crease will prevent the zipper from moving as the fabric is so stiff.
The zipper is covered by a large flap on the bottom that velcros to a large flap above the zipper, essentially creating a seal that I really can't imagine ever leaking (unless you put the bag on backwards, with the zipper facing forward instead of backwards). We never went through rain but we went through snow with no issues of leakage.
There was NO flapping or moving about while we were underway. The eight way staps held tight and held everything securely, without putting stress on the bag itself since it covered the bag like a net as opposed to tying to the bag.
Last of all, it held about 100 pounds of clothes and gear without any stress or strain. The van was much more manageable with the weight being put in the middle of the car instead of on the hitch. Very handy in the snowy conditions in which we were navigating.
Of course it was much less convenient than the hitch mounted unit (hard to reach), but there are tradeoffs with everything (we spent $500 on our "Cargo Carrier" for our hitch).
Hard to beat for $50!
My only real complaint is the stiffness of opening and closing the zipper. I wish they had put straps on the zippers, and I'll probably find some and do it myself.

Thule 4502 CrossRoad Railing Roof Rack Foot Half Pack (Set of 2) Review

Thule 4502 CrossRoad Railing Roof Rack Foot Half Pack (Set of 2)
Average Reviews:

Had to use this set to move my Prologue racks closer to the front of the SUV so that the racks do not block the trunk lid from moving up entirely. The steel straps are wrapped in the rubber material and "wind" quite easily with the Allen tool on the locking cap. You can wind the strap to get a very good hold on the rack but be sure not to over-tighten so that you don't damage the factory rack (if that is where you are using the foot pads). I purchases the multi-lock pack so that I am able to use multiple locks with the same key. If you anticipate that you will use may types of racks or lockable systems, it is also a good investment. Once I placed the foot packs to wear I needed them to be, it was a simply install and very secure once the locks went in. I have a two bike Prologue rack and this will stay on the SUV for the rest of the Spring/Summer. So far, I am happy with this purchase. The quality also looks very clean with nice fit.

Lund 601016 Soft Pack Roof Top Bag Review

Lund 601016 Soft Pack Roof Top Bag
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After reading good reviews of this bag we bought it to put on our 2006 Grand Prix GT for a week long camping trip for a family of 4. This car has no luggage rack and a slightly sloping roof that has little purchase for the included roof anchors. After going about 10 miles (still in town) it was apparent that the included hardware was not going to be sufficient because the anchors kept popping lose from the door frame. A quick stop to a W**Mart and picking up a set of cam buckle tie downs made this no longer a problem.
Keeper 5105 10' Cam Buckle Tie-Down, 300 lbs. WLL (900 lbs. break strength), 4 Pk, i-Pack You attach the end outside the passenger compartment and then feed the rest of the strap through the passenger compartment and attach on the other bag strap outside the car and shutting the strap in the door frame. Using this essentially makes the bag one with the car with no roof rack needed.
As for the bag itself...
It is large. We packed 4 Coleman Cambridge 30-Degree Rectangular Size Sleeping Bag (Tall) (in vacuum bags), a 13'x13' folding gazebo, a Coleman Family Dome Tent, two Big Bubba Travel Chair - Black, a PORTABLE FOLDING SPORTS CAMPING ARM CHAIR w/cup holder, a Coleman H/T Two-Burner InstaStart Propane Stove, a gym bag stuffed with clothes and 4 coats in vacuum bags.
The bag worked great going to Yellowstone and it was easy to pack. On the way back we hit 17 hours of thunderstorms at interstate speeds (worst rainstorms I have ever driven through). MINIMAL water entered the bag but you would be advised to put everything that can't get wet in a plastic bag.
During the beginning of the trip the wind noise that the straps made was unbearable and we were considering canceling our vacation. Then I got an idea and stopped at another W**Mart and grabbed a package of POLY TEX STR10 "BLACK STALLION" TIE DOWN RUBBER STRAP - 10"(PACK OF 10). I put one between the front strap and the rear strap on each side and the noise pretty much DISAPPEARED. This is not a fault in the bag design, it's simply a matter of not enough lateral tension being applied to the strap to keep them from vibrating in the wind. All bags like this will do this if you do not take this step.
Conclusion: If you do not have a roof rack but want to haul a lot of stuff and are willing to spend a few more dollars on the tie downs and rubber straps this is a great bag and I would recommend it. It is also worth noting that a quick hosing off was all that was needed to clean it.
