Yakima Big PowderHound Snow Roof Rack Review

Yakima Big PowderHound Snow Roof Rack
Average Reviews:

The Big Powder Hound is a great rack for hauling multiple pairs of ski's or snowboards. Mounting was extremely quick & easy as well as being secure. Construction seems robust enough to last for a long time. I did add the sks locks & they have worked great as well. However I did have 1 lock freeze up on a particularly nasty day, might want to keep a can of spray on ice melter handy to deal with that possible issue.

Easy rack to put on for seasonal use and has held up well for the couple years I have had it. 3-4 pairs of skis can easily be accommodated. Recommend optional locking mechanism. Can occasionally pop open if not locked.

Tired of the same boring, predictable ski racks you see on every other car? Turn to the Yakima FreshSesh, a funky, customizable beauty that lets you customize your sticks' ride. The FreshSesh, which holds up to six pairs of skis or four snowboards, comes with two different sets of decals (snow camo and bubblegum), or you can add your own decals for an even fresher look. Even better, the carrier's universal mounting hardware fits round, square, and most factory crossbars right out of the box--no extra hardware required.
Thanks to the carrier's one-button access, you can even open the rack and remove your skis while wearing mittens, a must on chilly winter days. Other details include an integrated SkiLift that gives you plenty of blinding clearance, soft rubber edges that gently cradle skis and boards, and a one-year manufacturer's warranty.

Yakima FatCat 4-Ski Rooftop Carrier Review

Yakima FatCat 4-Ski Rooftop Carrier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My fat cat got broken in the highway 70, ruined all the skiis and boards with it last year after using it about 4 months. I liked the design and look on my 4runner but it's not durable to highway speeds with 25 mpg gust winds...

Click Here to see more reviews about: Yakima FatCat 4-Ski Rooftop Carrier

The current trend in skis is just like the necktie trend in the '70s--they just keep getting fatter. That's why Yakima released the four-ski FatCat rooftop carrier, which is wide enough for four pairs of fat skis or two snowboards. The FatCat boasts a low-profile mounting system that works on round bars, square bars, and most factory roof racks right out of the box. The carrier's massive jaws and unique hinge system, meanwhile, hold your skis and boards comfortably and securely.
Thanks to the FatCat's aerodynamic shape, you won't suffer from poor gas mileage on the highway, nor will the carrier make annoying whistling sounds as you drive. Other details include an integrated SkiLift feature that easily clears tall bindings, rubber edging that's gentle on your gear, and SKS compatibility. The FatCat carries a one-year warranty.

Inno MV276 Magnetic Ski and Snowboard Carrier Review

Inno MV276 Magnetic Ski and Snowboard Carrier

I had used one of these racks when I rented a care in Salt Lake City going to Park City to ski. I had preordered a ski rack, but when I picked up the car no rack. I complained to the rental clerk who said, "no problem" and called someone to install a rack. I figured this would take awhile and was annoyed, but I went out to the car 5 mins later and there were these two magnetic racks that worked perfectly for the trip. Finally I bought my own for my new Infinity EX35 for which there is no aftermarket bolt on rack, went to Mammoth from LA with my skis and poles on top with no problems. The racks even have locks which help prevent them from being removed with skis in them and they take about 30 secs to mount on the car. If you only need to transport skis and poles and not bikes, kayaks, nuclear weapons, etc. these are perfect.

Thule 724 Flat Top 4-Ski Rooftop Carrier Review

Thule 724 Flat Top 4-Ski Rooftop Carrier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I found this product to be a good solution for what I needed it to do--Carry my families ski's up to the slopes. There's not a lot of noise from wind aerodynamic issues, even at high speeds. It holds the skis firmly in place, and has a very easy to use open button & close snap. Although it may not be made of metal, it's sturdy enough that nothing moves in it.
This was by far a better option that several other systems I found, which offered too many parts & not a whole lot of value for the price they wanted. The factory installed ski rack which would have cost $300 was roughly the same size and was not as good a deal as this rack for my 2000 Dodge Durango.
In response to the previous two reviews, I must note a few corrections.
Firstly, the rack DOES hold two snowboards, I tested it with two of my friends snowboards on my last trip. In order for them to fit, one must face down and the other face up, one on top of the other. The individual who posted that it does not obviously didn't think to try stacking them.
Second, In response to the fact that the bar could simply be twisted--you're joking right? It would attract attention if an individual attempted to twist off the bar. On top of that, in order for them to twist off the bar, they would have to break the board/skis in the rack in the process, and that would defeat the purpose, would it not?
The only problem I had with this was the FM1 adapter which was required to install this carrier on my factory bars. The instructions for assembly didn't provide any information for any vehicles besides imports. (Domestic cars are out of luck since this is a Sweden based company!)

The Thule 724 Flat Top 4-Ski Rooftop Carrier combines quality construction with great looks, and holds up to four pairs of skis, or two snowboards. The Flat Top installs quickly and easily, but does require the Xadapt2 or the FM1 when used on an Aero bar.

This rooftop carrier includes all the hardware needed for mounting to Thule load bars, and is compatible with clamping systems (sold separately) for mounting to factory rack systems. Standard Snowboard Vertical Mount Review

Standard Snowboard Vertical Mount
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I took a gamble purchasing this product. I looked all over the net for a solid review and photos but found only the ones on amazon. The other wall mounts seemed complicated (spring and resistance mechanisms). This one was simple: two pegs that hold the board up on its widened end. Approximately 10 and 3/4 inches. If your board never gets wider than this, then it will not be wide enough to be held between the two pegs. If the board is never more narrow than this, then it will not fit between the pegs. I bought two of these mounts, one for my board and my fiancee's board. Both fit very well and are very stable. Her board is held at a lower point (near the top of the board) than mine (near the center). The package was delivered in timely manner from the retailer and comes with two screws and drywall mounting supports for the screws. See my photo for two mounts side by side.

Mont Blanc Powder Top 6-Ski/Snowboard Roof Mount Rack Review

Mont Blanc Powder Top 6-Ski/Snowboard Roof Mount Rack
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this ski rack for my 2007 FJ Cruiser, specifically because it was priced right at the time I found it($85) and I found out that the manufacturer of this ski rack is the same manufacturer of the FJ Cruiser OEM roof rack. I like Thule and Yakima's racks, but I could not find a similar product new in box for the same price.
Since the FJ's roofrack crossbars are wider than most roof rack crossbars, I bought these based on the photos of the universal mounts that I saw, which looked like they would fit the wider crossbars and they did.
The instructions that were included showed old mounting hardware, but the installation is fairly straightforward. I've used the rack so far on two trips into the Colorado Rockies , holding 2 pairs of skis with no problems at all. I experienced some slight whistling noises at speeds over 65mph, but some minor adjustments to the skis appeared to fix it.
And the end of the day, the locking clips were a little difficult to open, but that may have been due to cold weather. I'll leave them unclipped for the day. A little WD-40 may fix that. A very minor issue. Returning home, the clips worked fine.
The only minor complaint is that the rack limits my clearance. I barely fit in my garage (without skis) and my best clearance is estimated at 7'2", although I haven't measured to confirm. Keep that in mind if you're driving a taller SUV or truck
Two keys came included with the racks and both racks can be locked.
Overall, I'm very happy with this purchase and would recommend it.

Thule Universal FlatTop 6 Rack Review

Thule Universal FlatTop 6 Rack
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My overall impression is that for the price, functionality and ease of installation the Thule 91725 is helluva bargain! I'll probably buy another Thule product because of this purchase.
Description:
Not to offend people or something by stating something that may be obvious to some, but the "Thule 91725 Flat Top" is simply the carrier portion; it doesn't include the carrier base, i.e. you should already have a carrier base installed or you'll have to get one.
The carriers themselves work just like any other carrier with locks and large release buttons. These are wide carriers. So, if you're thinking of getting a couple sets for a mid-size or compact car, it's probably not going fit side by side (e.g. one that opens to the left side and one that opens toward the right side of your vehicle) unless your roof width is wide enough to accomidate or you have extra wide base. The rubber pieces in the carriers to hold your skis/boards in place are teardrop-shaped; the wider end holding the skis or boards in place. Each of the two ski racks comes with 2 clamps and each clamp is composed of two pieces: basically two wide/obtuse-angled "V"-shapes that when joined together with unique hex-screws on each tip, form a diamond shape. The special hex-screw driver is/should be provided with the package.
Considerations:
You'll probably want to account for the clearance between the roof and your ski carrier base's crossbars: assuming your bindings are already installed on your skis and/or board, if you use this carrier, and if your carrier base has only a 3" or less clearance between it and the roof of your vehicle and you place your bidings upside down then your bindings will probably hit the roof top (and probably not fit). In which case, you can always place the bindings up, ski/board base down toward the roof (with a set of skis laid side-by-side), but you won't be able to fit as many skis or snowboards.
Pros:
1. Fairly easy to install (took me about under 10 minutes including alignment): just 8 hex screws for 4 clamps (2 screws per clamp) to mess with.
2. Fairly easy to operate with big white release buttons.
3. "V" shapped clamps will fit just about any crossbar (e.g. eye-shaped, square and/or circular).
4. Comes with locks to secure skis/snowboards onto carrier and hex screws that are unique so it's not very easy to disassemble the clamps without the unique hex screw driver that's provided.
Cons:
1. May not provide enough clearance for some factory-installed base "racks", especially those that are fairly flushed to the roof. Thus, you may not be able to fit as many skis or snowboards.
2. Although the hex screws are unique (you will probably have a difficult time finding these at the local ACE Hardware or something), it is possible the hex screws can be loosened with the proper hex wrench or hex screw driver, i.e. the screws are exposed so even though you lock the carrier there's nothing covering the hex screws as an extra measure to mitigate tampering. Obviosly, if the Hex screws are removed from the carrier base, the entire carrier can be removed...along with your skis or board.
3. I'm not sure, but the teardrop-shape rubber material to keep the skis/snowboard held together in the carrier does not appear to be the type that will last for years, not that it's a big deal, but that's my assessment on it's "durability" and ability to maintain elasticity. I'll find out in 10 years.'08-'10 Subaru Impreza's w/OEM or factory-installed ski/snowboard carrier base:
I'm not sure how this will fit other vehicles, but I can certaily testify to how it fits on a Subie STi. I have a 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STi and this carrier's clamps fit perfectly onto the eliptical/"eye"-shaped OEM crossbars; I believe the ski base I have is the same OEM item for all '08-'10 Subaru Impreza models (including the WRX and the STi's). So, if you have an '08 or later model Impreza with the OEM ski base, the Thule 91725 is close to perfect. Again, not to offend people or anything, but just make sure the carriers are aligned properly; on the Impreza the passenger/rear portion of the roof is a little narrower than the driver/front portion of the roof. So, if you align it based on the roof line edges, then the carriers will be offset. And when you place the snowboards/skis they'll be skewed instead of parallel to the whole vehicle (if you're concerned about wind drag noise). '08-'10 Subaru Impreza ski and snowboard carrier base OEM part number is E361SFG300 and is a lot cheaper when you order it through an Subaru OEM distributor than from a dealership.
The Impreza's OEM carrier crossbars had enough clearance so I can place a set of skis together (base-to-base) and snowboard upside-down or two snowbaords together (base-to-base) without any part of the bindings (with the exception of the dangling ankle riser on the snowboard) touching the roof top.

SportRack A26395 Aero 1300 Roof Box Review

SportRack A26395 Aero 1300 Roof Box
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Much better than expected. I've only had this on my Toyota 4runner for a few weeks. Does not feel very heavy, nor does it affect my fuel/mileage so far. Easy to assemble. Also very easy to take on and off any standard crossbar.
The picture is actually inaccurate. Go to the officieal Sportrack website and type in ABS 1300 Ski model A26395. Or just type in the model number. You will see the actual picture is a much longer box. The typical Yakima or Thule Box that is similar sized will usually cost you about $350 to $500, you can buy the exact same one for only $200 on Amazon, under a mistaken picture. I am surprised they are selling this box at this price. I think it might be the price of the picture, which is a smaller dimension roof cargo box. The smaller box would not have fit my snowboard/skis, but the one that was shipped (model A26365) for $200 fit my gear perfect.
75" is definitely the length of the box in case you were wondering if it would be too long for your vehicle. Also, when the Sportrack box came in through UPS, i saw a "thule" symbol on the box.. Could it be the same company? who knows.. but the quality is exactly the same. Good lock on the box too. Oh and the model that came is one that opens on the passenger side only (for sidewalk loading). This was quite a deal! highly recommended!!

Thule 91726 Universal Pull Top 6 Pair Ski and Snowboard Carrier with Locks Review

Thule 91726 Universal Pull Top 6 Pair Ski and Snowboard Carrier with Locks
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this snowboard rack after much research and deliberation online. I have not yet used it for a snowboarding trip (perhaps I will update this review later).
But I can tell you I am pleased with the design & function. The rack pulls out horizontally over the side of the vehicle allowing easier access to the rack's contents.I was concerned that the sliding hinge would freeze up during winter. I have been driving with is on for a month or so and test it regularly. I believe the sliding hinge will not be a problem.
ONE MAIN QUESTION that I could barely find an answer for online is how the rack actually holds 4 snowboards (what the orientation would be). The rack is wide enough for only two boards side by side; therefore, the second pair of snowboards must face bindings down underneath the other snowboards (so that the snowboard's base is touching the base of the board above it). I wondered if the bindings of the lower set might not quite clear the roof's surface. I was right. While the bindings to fit (barely in some cases) I would be worried about binding straps scratching my roof when you pull the thule rack out or a driving on long trips while the binding straps are free to fly in the wind. The solution for this is to put the boards with higher bindings on top. For long trips I plan to jury rig some duck cloth atop my roof so the bindings don't hang down & stratch my roof.

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just fitted this to my 998xt rack. It fits fairly well, and feels pretty secure. It's well made, and comes with all the accessories you'll need.
The downside is that it's impossible to get my shaped skis (Rossi Bandit B3s) into the rack the way they suggest (back to back). They do fit, but less securely, as individual skis. This reduces the capacity to 3 pairs of skis, and not 6.
Also the height of the rack, even with my relatively short skis, is insane - the tops of the skis stand a good 2 feet above the roofline of my SUV.
To be honest.... I wish I'd bought a roof rack, and just stuck with the Thule rack for my bike.

Yakima Q Clip Set Review

I have had the Q-tower system for a number of years, through three different vehicles. All in all a great rack system, except for two items: The cost of the little parts that you need to convert from one vehicle to the other are stratospheric! I really don't mind Yakima making their money on the big ticket items such as towers, boxes, etc. but the little adapter items should be priced more fairly. It seems to me that once you are locked into a Yakima system they fully intend to hose you on the little things. Too bad. Further, the Yakima website is a mess to try and find the specific little items and accessories that they intend on hosing you with!
