Yakima SkyBox 21 Rooftop Cargo Box Review

Yakima SkyBox 21 Rooftop Cargo Box
Average Reviews:

The box works great for us. It is easy to install (even on a SUV) because it is leight weight, and once you have installed your crossbars at the right distance it takes less than one minute to fasten. No wind noices on the highway, no shaking or wobbeling, and we only lost 1 mile per gallon on gas. It is very spacious, and even large suitcases and a stroller and bassinet easily fit in there. I would definitely recommend this box.

Family camping trips can be a little cramped, as even the smallest tents, sleeping bags, and backpacks take up a ton of space in the car--and that doesn't account for the coolers, camping chairs, canopies, and family dog. Enter the Yakima SkyBox 21 rooftop cargo box, which stores a ton of your gear in a single, out-of-the-way location. Designed to fit crossbar spreads as short as 24 inches, the SkyBox 21 includes quick-installation mounting hardware that accommodates round, square, and most factory crossbars. More importantly, the SkyBox 21 offers 21 cubic feet of storage space, so you don't have to cram everything in the trunk or back seat.
Thanks to the drag-minimizing aerodynamic shape, the cargo box won't dramatically boost your gas consumption on long road trips. Other details include a dual opening system that unlatches on both sides for maximum convenience; an extra-stiff lid that vibrates less than other cargo boxes and is easier to open and shut with one hand; an integrated track system for such accessories as a cargo net or base pad; a new lid shape that's easier to grip; an improved security latch that keeps your stuff safe; and a black matte anti-scratch finish. Also equipped with SKS locks, the SkyBox 21 measures 92 by 18 by 36 inches (W x H x D).

Rola 59109 Adventure System with Swing Away Review

Rola 59109 Adventure System with Swing Away
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This particular item is fantastic! Functionality is awesome! The box itself is a little hard to handle by a single person, but can easily be handled by two. For security, go ahead and order the locking hitch pin, for stability reasons, order the hitch tightener, and for legality reasons, go ahead and order the license plate relocation kit with light. Unfortunately, I was awaiting the item for an upcoming trip, and when it arrived, the hardware and swingaway was not part of the shipment. The customer service that I received following that initial call was atrocious, and each process and escalation procedure that was, or wasn't followed needs to be looked at and corrected accordingly. I am in the customer service industry, and was extremely disappointed, not only in the ways that my issue was handled, but the number of times that I was lied to by representitives of the company. If one more persons reads me a script of how they are the supervisor on duty, and that a manager is not available, I'm going to scream, and insist yet AGAIN to speak to someone in the US. Overall a very sad, disappointing customer service experience, and I will make sure that hundreds and potentially thousands of people hear about it.

Thule 665C Transporter Combination Hitch Mount 2011
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This did what I need it to on a 2000+ trip through the mountains. It was solid but did often scrape on driveway entrances/exits. I agree with another reviewer who thought it sat back too far. Also, it doesn't accomodate a hitch lock. Pretty odd; I guess I don't have that much faith in my fellow man. I ended up getting the thickest elongated padlock I could find and used it as my hitch lock. I had no problems. It's a little awkward to fit in but still doable by one person. It's a very good product

I recommend this product for anyone who needs extra room while traveling and do not want to spend a lot for the extra room. We have a Volvo XC90, however, when we travel with our pet (lab) it allows him to have room in the back and keep all of our belonging clean, dry, and without dog hair. We traveled more than 2000 miles without any problems.

I have a subie like the pix and liked the look. I thought it would fit, but it's too long. I can only open the back 2/3 of the way. But no worries, it's not like I keep it on there all the time. It was nice to put all the beach stuff up there, and easy to wash out at home. While driving, no noise, no wobble. Didn't notice any impact to MPG. Box was easy to set up, worked well. Totally happy with buy, Yakima is worth it!

Thule Mountaineer ES Review

Thule Mountaineer ES
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had no concept of how long this box was when I bought it. To give you an idea of how large this box is, it is as long as a twin bed and almost as wide. My roommate thought it was some sort of coffin when she saw it sitting on my bed. I bought this box because it was on sale and I was looking for a cargo box to carry skis/poles/boots or paintball equipment. This was overkill for what I needed. (Though probably still the cheapest option at the time.)
Anywho, I own a 2002 Volvo V70XC and this box, though large, works fine. There is a slight overhang in the front to compensate for the clearance for the rear hatch, but nothing that compromises visibility. The only thing that is not so great is that it does not have any sort of quick release clamp system. It has the usual bolt/plate/nut getup. However, my boyfriend and I still installed it with minimal stress in 45 minutes. Our strategy was to pull the cross bars off of the car, attach them to the box (hand tight) and then lift the whole business onto the factory rails and adjust from there. It worked out great. No tools are needed for the installation aside from what they ship with the box.
I would recommend this box for anyone who needs to double their car capacity (by volume), but not for the average camper/skiier. It is a huuuuuuge box, and probably not worth the hassle if all you're packing is a few pairs of skis or some sleeping bags and a tent.

Thule 604 Ascent 1600 Rooftop Cargo Box (Black) Review

Thule 604 Ascent 1600 Rooftop Cargo Box (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just used this carrier on a 1600-mile round trip from northern Illinois to North Carolina (on a 2005 Astro Van). On the return trip (September 14), we went through extreme hurricane force winds (aftermath from Hurricane Ike) of 75 MPH from all directions in Louisville, KY. The wind downed trees on the interstate, but the carrier held firmly and no rain entered despite an incredible amount of buffeting due to the winds. I was concerned that the sideways and up-and-down effects of severe buffeting might loosen the grips on the crossbar, but the grips were as tight when I arrived home as they were when I left home. I saw two top carriers that had separated from their vehicles and had been run over on I-65...that's how bad the wind was.
When I first got it it fit up well, but one of the saddles that sits on the cross rail broke. I called Thule customer service and they were very nice. They immediately sent four new saddles and said that I must have received one of their earlier units that had substandard saddles. They apparently discovered this recently and were very accommodating. I appreciate their fine customer service, although I am glad I had time to get the saddles before my trip. Suggest that you make certain that you have the most recent saddles.
Shipping service and tracking through Amazon was great, and the price was the best I could find!Thule 604 Ascent 1600 Rooftop Cargo Box (Black)

Thule Ascent 1500 Cargo Box Review

Thule Ascent 1500 Cargo Box

(More customer reviews)
I purchased the Thule Rooftop Cargo Box after seeing them on so many vehicles on my travels across the U.S.. The 603 Ascent 1500 was selected as the size and shape fit my camping needs to a "T". Once I received it and opened the box I was skeptical as it is very light, but feeling confident with the numbers of them in use, I mounted it to my 2001 Subaru Outback. Wow! Easy and Quick! No brainer there! Then it was off to Washington State an over 2100 mile trip.
Well, I am back and only have enthusiastic phrase for this fabulous cargo box! High winds at 75 mph and rain didn't phase it one bit! As far as my gas mileage, I really think it increased! I get 25 mpg normally and I averaged just over 24 mpg! That includes going through the Rockies several times and the high wind on the nose driving! I don't believe I did that well without it. This is a Great Product and I am sure you will be pleased as well! Purchase it, you won't regret it! Amazon gave great service and shipping!

Well worth it for the extra space or skis and boards. Out-of-the box had it on my Nissan Pathfinder in 5 minutes, great latching design. My guess is that it will fit almost all autos with cross bar roof racks. Loads of space, does seem a but long, the 1600 is a bit shorter and might look more proportional to my Pathifinder, this 1700 is probably best for the Tahoes, Escalades, and Yukons out there. In any case, awesome product, and Amazon has the best price and arrived (via some shipping company, not UPS) in about three days, pretty fast. No shipping issues for me.

We bought this to go on our Buick Rendezvuous for our trips back home to Michigan. It has went through almost 10000 miles and still looks like new. It has weathered 105 degree heat in South Dakota, a freezing snowstorm in Michigan, and one of the worse rainstorms I have ever seen in Minnesota. It has never leaked. It does take a little practice to get on correctly and don't do it in the parking lot like my girlfriend and I did! It comes with all the tools you will need. It gives us so much more room on the inside!

SportRack A90095 Explorer Roof Box Review

SportRack A90095 Explorer Roof Box
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have only a few complaints about this product.
First the material it is made of is thin and flimsy. It is certainly not as strong as some of the boxes made from ABS plastic. If you park in the sun for any time the plastic softens to the point where you may have trouble getting the hinges to engage to hold the top up. Another result of the softened plastic is the sagging of the hinge side of the lower portion of the box. This causes the top to sag down slightly reducing the clearance for loading items.
Another issue is the assembly. It was painfully cumbersome, and I am very mechanically inclined. It's definitely a two man job, one to hold the top while the other attaches and tightens the nuts and bolts.
Attaching to my vehicle (04 Dodge Durango) was a pain as well. The height of the vehicle made it challenging enough but attaching the "U" bolts on the hinge side was a real pain. If you have a smaller vehicle like a sedan or a Subaru Outback or something like that it may be easier
But, this thing is huge and holds a lot. We had 2 larger rollaway suitcases, two large duffle bags, 2 sleeping bags and 2 pillows and had room for coats and toiletry bags. It really hold quite a bit. But one of the biggest advantages is has is the price. For the cost of a competing unit from yakithule you can by 5 of these things.
I highly recommend this unit if your budget is tight, especially if you can get someone else to assemble and install it...

Tough and spacious, the SportRack Explorer rooftop cargo box is an ideal accessory for people who need more storage space than their car can provide. The Explorer is made of high-density polyethylene, a sturdy, long-lasting material that stands up to bumps, rocks, and any other obstacle a road can provide. The box's 18 cubic feet of storage space, meanwhile, gives you plenty of room for extra luggage and sports gear. And despite the generous capacity, the Explorer isn't unwieldy enough to obstruct your vision while you drive. The Explorer, which offers a capacity of 100 pounds, measures 54 by 19.5 by 39 inches (W x H x D) and weighs 32 pounds without gear. The box comes with a U-bolt mounting bracket.

SportRack A90275 Aero XL Roof Box Review

SportRack A90275 Aero XL Roof Box
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Was very easy to mount on the Sequoia, and feels pretty sturdy (and watertight). Absolutely no wind noise or rattling could be heard inside the vehicle at 75 MPH. I bought it because the width and height makes it better for carrying family stuff than comparable size Thule or Yakima boxes, though it's not long enough for skis. Low price is a huge bonus. I also like that it opens from the back instead of the side, since on my tall vehicle the easiest way to reach the box is standing on the rear bumper. I looked at the big name boxes, and I can't see how they are worth 2.5x as much.
**UPDATE** Have now taken on a few long trips. It did not seem to affect gas mileage at all, and stayed dry inside through 300 miles of downpour. I have to take it off to fit in the garage, which would be true of any box, but I can get it on or off in less than 10 minutes. I fit 2 carry-on suitcases, 4 sleeping bags, a stroller, a full-frame baby backpack, and a small baby bouncer seat inside.

Great box. I paid a little extra for the pro model to get the silver color, cargo net and pad to hold everything in place. Fit and finish is great. Don't think the pad and net are worth the extra $100, but that's what it took to get the silver finish which looks great on my white ML320 Bluetec. The net I must admit looks like it will work fine, but the pad (chuckle) its no thicker than a file folder from the office! It comes rolled up for you to use at will, and is not glued down as I thought. Will comment more once I put it to use in the near future.

Family camping trips can be a little cramped, as even the smallest tents, sleeping bags, and backpacks take up a ton of space in the car--and that doesn't account for the coolers, camping chairs, canopies, and family dog. Enter the Yakima SkyBox Pro 16s rooftop cargo box, a futuristic-looking storage container that's ideal for toting moderate amounts of gear on camping or ski trips.Designed to fit crossbar spreads as short as 24 inches, the SkyBox Pro 16s comes with quick-installation mounting hardware that accommodates round, square, and most factory crossbars. More importantly, the Pro 16s offers 16 cubic feet of storage, so you don't have to cram everything into the trunk or back seat of your car. Just load up the SkyBox Pro 16s and hit the road. Perhaps the coolest feature, however, is the aerodynamic shape, which reduces drag and cuts down on wind noise. As a result, you needn't worry about shelling out a ton of money for extra gas on long road trips.
The SkyBox Pro 16s also offers a new lid shape that's easier to grab even if you have particularly clumsy meat hooks. Plus, the lid is 50 percent stiffer than lids on previous Yakima cargo boxes, making it easier to open and shut with one hand. Other details include a Super Latch Security system that keeps your stuff safely inside; SKS locks; and a gear management net and cargo pad to secure and protect your stuff. Boasting an ultra-sleek silver finish, the SkyBox Pro 16s measures 36 by 15 by 81 inches (W x H x D). All Yakima skyboxes carry a limited lifetime warranty.

(More customer reviews)
Much better than expected. I've only had this on my Toyota 4runner for a few weeks. Does not feel very heavy, nor does it affect my fuel/mileage so far. Easy to assemble. Also very easy to take on and off any standard crossbar.
The picture is actually inaccurate. Go to the officieal Sportrack website and type in ABS 1300 Ski model A26395. Or just type in the model number. You will see the actual picture is a much longer box. The typical Yakima or Thule Box that is similar sized will usually cost you about $350 to $500, you can buy the exact same one for only $200 on Amazon, under a mistaken picture. I am surprised they are selling this box at this price. I think it might be the price of the picture, which is a smaller dimension roof cargo box. The smaller box would not have fit my snowboard/skis, but the one that was shipped (model A26365) for $200 fit my gear perfect.
75" is definitely the length of the box in case you were wondering if it would be too long for your vehicle. Also, when the Sportrack box came in through UPS, i saw a "thule" symbol on the box.. Could it be the same company? who knows.. but the quality is exactly the same. Good lock on the box too. Oh and the model that came is one that opens on the passenger side only (for sidewalk loading). This was quite a deal! highly recommended!!

This works like it's supposed to. Holds my 1800 without issue. A few notes though:
1) Get your own mounting screws, the stuff that comes with it is junk
2) I ended up putting up 1x4 supports and mounting everything to those. I didn't put the middle support in, and it doesn't seem to matter.
3) My ceiling is is just over 10' tall, and this only comes down to about eye-level for me (I'm 6' tall). It's enough for me, but you might consider getting a longer rope.

Thule 682 Sidekick Rooftop Cargo Box Review

Thule 682 Sidekick Rooftop Cargo Box
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this with some skepticism, having read other reviews that gave it low marks, and also having bought Thule products in the past and cursed them as I tried assembling and installing them, what with missing pieces and the like.
Happily, this box is fine. It does seem flimsy when you're assembling it, and it even seems that way when it's open on top of the car. It seems to be engineered to be as light as possible, which it is, and that can be unnerving until you get it fastened down and locked closed.
Assembly: It's awkward. It took two of us, me and my 2 year old! Seriously. It's a bit hairy for one person to get it right, since you have to match the hinges with the sides of the "clam shell", and their fit doesn't seem quite right until you tighten them up well. Still, it went OK, about 20 minutes for me to do, far better than a Thule roof racks I installed some years back, where I was dealing with bent and missing parts. If you do this alone, you need to brace it well at an angle as you hook the top and bottom together. Much easier with two people.
Installation: Dead easy on the factory roof rack. (We have a Pontiac Aztek.) THERE IS NO NEED TO BUY ADDITIONAL BRACKETS, though when viewing ads for this, you might think so at first glance. The package includes 4 U-brackets which attach to your roof racks and are held inside by hand-swivel bolts (whatever they're called). One thing I added while doing the installation was to put duct tape over the inside holes for the U-brackets. There are several holes in each sequence, and you only use two out of 4 or 5; the others are exposed. Covering with tape might help keep spray out.
Performance: Pretty good! We drove 2300 miles with this unit, of which about 300 were in driving rain. During the worst rain, we did have dampness and some droplets of water at the bottom front inside, but the gear was sitting up on ridges and was fine - bag in front was damp but not wet. If you have cloth bags that press to the very bottom, I'd put them in plastic if you'll be hitting heavy rain (and ours was VERY heavy, and at 70 mph driving speed).
We noticed an increase in wind noise at high speeds, and in our rough tests, it knocked about 2 mpg off our gas mileage at 75 mph, but on a 50 mph stretch of several hundred miles we couldn't tell a difference.
Removal takes literally five minutes. You undo (by hand) four pairs of swivel bolts, and lift it right off the roof. Reinstallation is about the same.
Overall, we're extremely happy with it and very glad we bought it.

Works great and fits my Honda Pilot w/ factory crossbars.
This box is built noticeably sturdier when compared to some of the less expensive or older models. However, I'm not convinced the shell really needs to be thicker than other boxes including their own since they all come with a 100% lifetime warranty. I have never heard of problems with the boxes being damaged unless they fly off your car. The thicker shell does add to the weight of the box. At 47 pounds it is five pounds more than the comparable RocketBox 16. Honestly, I was looking for the cheapest one I could find that was long enough to fit skis and snowboards (this one is 81 inches-skis can be angled to get a few more inches if needed) and sit on top of my Honda Pilot without getting in the way of the rear hatch. Again, all Yaks and Thules have a 100% factory warranty and if you get them from rei they will stand by their stuff forever. I don't consider this one "cheap" at all but, it was the only that fit my needs. It is well made and the amenities are nice (e.g. dual side opening, internal tie-downs, nicer lock). The quick connect latches on the inside that hold the box to your bars are actually really nice and super convenient (all boxes have these now). No noise or rattle when driving. Mileage definitely suffers but, what would you expect with the added bulk and weight of the box and your extra cargo. And when I say "extra cargo", I mean things like missiles, baby...
When not on my car, I stow the Yak SB16s on the ceiling of my garage with the Racor PBH-1R Ceiling-Mounted Bike Lift. See posted photos.
