(More customer reviews)It was really easy to put together and use. It was well packed - it emerged unscathed from a very scathed box. The steel seems thin until you relaize that it is just carrying bikes, not a trailor. It is strong enough and doesn't weigh a ton.
However... It comes in three main pieces that you bolt together. The resulting rack does exactly what it is supposed to. And it is solid. That's almost enough. The problem is that a thief must remove, at most, two bolts to steal your bikes. I used some Locktite on the bolts and cured that little failing. Now the bolts can't come out and the rack is about perfect.

(More customer reviews)I bought this because I was told by someone at the R. A. Allen Co. that this would work with their Bike Rack, model 440RR. It turns out that I was lied to or was given an answer by someone who did not know anything. It does NOT work with Allen's own bike rack!!!!! The cylinder is too thick (i.e. the diameter of the cylinder is too wide) to fit through the hitch insert hole.
This item will NOT work with Allen Bike Racks and company will not return your phone call or help you in any way!!!!! (I called them twice and left two messages with an Alex, who has never returned my phone call.)
I will never buy another item from the R. A. Allen Co. again.

The Allen 501L Universal Stainless Steel Locking Hitch Pin for 2-Inch or 1 1/4-Inch Receiver Hitches functions to lock and tighten all 2-inch and 1-1/4-inch receiver racks. (It should be noted that this device, unlike the 500L-model hitch pin, will not work with Allen receiver racks.) The solid brass locking cylinder and cylinder case are durable and work to prevent bike theft. The lock is further secured by the internal O ring and water-tight cap, which protect the locking mechanism. Allen 102S Premium 2-Bike Trunk Mount Rack Review

(More customer reviews)After doing extensive price comparison and research, my husband and I settled on this rack for towing around our two mountain bikes. I tore open the box and within minutes before even reading instructions I was twisting and turning and figuring it out - if you take a long hard look at it, I think it's quite intuitive. With a quick look at the instructions to make sure I wasn't going to break it, I was ready to go try it out on my car - 2005 Ford Escape and my husband's car - 2005 Ford Focus ZX4 with a factory installed spoiler. I read on another website that this bike rack was compatable with cars with spoilers (stated: compatable with most factory installed spoilers). From tearing open the box to getting it set on a car took me less than ten minutes. No lie! The padding on this is nice where it contacts the car, the craddles for the bikes are nice and grippy and sturdy, the fold-flat design is wonderful and very easy to use, the set up is a breeze for one person and take-down is just as easy, loading the bikes was easy, too. It looks really nice, both bikes made it in and out of the rack after a short car ride with no damage, bumps, bruises, loss, etc.
**Oh, P.S. if you are reading this and have a ladies or bent-frame bike make sure you pick up or have an adapter bar (Allen also makes one of these which I also got and am very pleased with as it's easy to use and gentle on my bike) so that your bike will be able to be safely mounted on the rack correctly.

(More customer reviews)We purchased this product so we could haul 4 bikes at the same time we are towing a popup camper. The tow vehicle is a 2008 Aspen SUV. In that situation there are some options but they are limited. We also wanted something we could use whether or not we are towing the camper, so a camper-mounted rack was out. The good news is that 4 bikes fit on the rack with very little problem - I rotated the handlebars on bike #1 90 degress to help the puzzle fit but that was the only modification. The bad news is, when we arrived at our destination there was some damage to the rear door of our vehicle, where the lower bar rests. That is a lot of weight, and apparently that part of the door could not handle it. There are a couple small dents, which are not exceedingly hideous but are noticable. I am considering adding some kind of buffer to that area, something that can absorb / distrubute the weight without incurring further damage to the door. Anybody have any suggestions?

Allen Deluxe 2-Bike Trunk Mount Rack Review

(More customer reviews)I've been pretty nervous looking for a decent but affordable bike rack. After initially getting an Outback Rack from Target, I was disappointed by the flimsy construction and had to return it. I did some more researching and wasn't able to find any reviews for low-mid-priced racks online. Found a Bell 3-bike rack from Walmart and later on a Bell 2-bike rack from Sports Authority. These were a lot sturdier but also quite heavy.
I have a mountain bike that weighs about 35lbs. A friend of mine has a road bike that weighs about 25lbs. I kept looking and finally settled on the Allen because of the price, design and construction.
(I took a star off for aesthetics. The foam supports are grey. The top and bottom struts are unpainted silver aluminum, and the caps at the end of the rack are white.)
A couple of things I learned:
* cloth/nylon strap tie downs are better than plastic or rubber which become brittle after repeated use and exposure to different weather conditions
* use of lighter weight aluminum is better than steel
* the more anchor points to your car the better (3 is the minimum)
* put the heavier bike on the slot closer to the car
* women's bikes or bikes without a horizontal beam from the seat to the handlebar column will require a "bike adaptor"
* when not in use, remove the rack from the car to prevent it from being stolen or the foam padding from melting onto your car
* lock your bike(s) to the rack with a separate chain
* use common sense and don't put more than the number of bikes the rack was designed for
* drive more slowly and carefully on uneven streets
