(More customer reviews)On the first speed bump I hit, the cradle left the mount, thank God there was no traffic on the road and I was able to pick up my GPS before it got run over, I used some rubber tape to secure the cradle in the ball and then while going over a railroad track, the whole ball came off the mount. The one that looks like a zip tie works much better.

Saris B.A.T. 2-Bike Spare Tire Rack Review

(More customer reviews)Purchasing a bike rack for a 2007 Toyota Rav4 is a big pain in the a**.
The rear door for the 2007 (and I believe 2006, both of which saw a significant redesign to previous models) swings to the side rather than up. The spare tire is attached to the rear door, and there's a metal bracket that the tire bolts onto.
I originally purchased the Yakima Spare Joe and it didn't really fit on the Rav4 due to the bracket in the back blocking the strap that is supposed to run vertically behind the tire.
I returned that one and purchased this one instead. It's a pretty good price but requires that you also purchase one of two special metal pieces that goes behind the tire and eventually gives you something to bolt the BAT to. See: Saris BAT Spare Tire Rack Mounting Plate B - 996B. For a simple hunk of metal and a bolt, $50 is pretty ridiculously expensive, making the entire product much more expensive than it initially appears.
Once you get everything you have to attach it to your car. The plate the company recommends doesn't fit the Rav4 at all, as the spare tire mount (the Toyota bracket) has a metal lip that is in the way of the BAT bracket.
Your only options at this point are to return everything or bust out your handy metal grinder and grind off the entire metal lip on the spare tire mount. Which is what we did and at that point I was able to attach everything and it worked fine after that.
An additional annoyance is that to actually get to your spare tire in case of a flat, you need to remove the BAT, which is to be expected, but for some reason they didn't bother to make the final mounting bolt a size larger than can be removed by standard lug wrenches, so you have to carry an additional wrench around to removed the bolt.
It would have been handy if the customer rep that I spoke to on the phone from Saris had warned me ahead of time that this didn't fit my Rav4.
Anyway, now that everything is on it does seem to work fine.

Yakima Spare Tire Carrier Review

(More customer reviews)I got this bracket to hold my second spare on a Body Armor Roof Rack on my Jeep. Since this rack has thicker bars on the basket I can not use the brackets coming with the part so I have a hard time to install it. With the original brackets it would bemuch easier but that's my rack, not a general thing. My roof rack is in 8 feet height which makes it harder but it is doing its job very well. I'm still using additional straps, better safe than sorry.
I would recommend it to a friend.

(More customer reviews)The product is an incredible tool, but has a major flaw. When you travel more than 90km / h is impossible to prevent the strings vibrate in the wind, producing an unpleasant noise.
It may be because you have to put a lot of strength to make it tight, but this is not recommended, because there are roofs of cars that are very soft and can dent.
If anyone knows of any solution to this, please share it.
So far I have tested on two cars in different position constraint and degree of adjustment and the sound has been impossible to remove completely.

Thule Hang Two Surf Carrier Review

(More customer reviews)Was excited to get this as my crossbars are very close together and lateral stability was key. My board is 11'3" L 29.5" W and over 4" thick. Had everything set up all nice and neat until I tried to get the straps on. Except they are too short to hook on for my board. Don't see how any stand up board or thicker and wider board would fit with the included straps so I was back to standard compression straps. So much for the quick convenience. But the captures are nice and work well. So hopefully Thule will send me some longer straps when they wise up and make them bigger. I did call to complain. If your dimensions are smaller than mine (29.5" w and about 4.5" thick) then you'll be fine. The straps were short by about 2+ inches at their longest.

Swagman XP 2-Bike Spare Tire Mount Rack Review

(More customer reviews)Our experience with this bike rack is rather bumpy. But with patience and persistence from Swagman and from eager customers (us) the end result is very good.
We have a Toyota Rav4 2007 and had hard time to find a spare tire mounted bike rack. As far as I know, only Swagman has made special replacement back plate to fit our car and offered it for free when we purchased a Swagman XP 2 Bike Tire Mount from any vendor. We ended up buying from Bike Nashbar via Amazon. When the bike rack (from Bike Nashbar) and the replacement back plate (from Swagman) arrived we found the rack did not have firm contact points on the spare tire as the instructions advised. We contacted Swagman again and they immediately sent two shims that solved the problem. Now we have probably the first working tire mounted bike rack on a Toyota Rav4 2007 in the United States and are very happy. I thank Swagman, especially its knowledgeable and patient contact person, for helping us though.

Wanted to let buyers know that to fit round bars you need to purchase adapter ISF715 sold separately. This is not clear in the description, and conveniently amazon doesn't carry it. also the nuts in the universal mounts are a nylon, I have had the Thule ones break on me, but not big deal can be replaced easily and cheaply. the inside width is 24 inches so if you are carring a large SUP board it might not fit you would need a pad or get the canoe Kayak carrier.

Have had spare tire mount carriers before and they weren't very sturdy and the bikes "swung". This is totally different. Mounts to the same mounting point as the spare tire itself and has additional tie-downs that extend down the frame to minimize "swinging". Works perfectly. Easy to install. It installs pretty easily - you have to take the spare tire off to mount it, and the first install can take up to 45 minutes when fiddling with the spare. But I especially like that I can keep the mounting hardware connected and still replace the tire cover. That way each time we travel we only need to slip off the tire cover and attach the main rack (what you see in the photo).
The bikes secure like a sandwich - the top piece which secures the bike frames to the rack comes with two securing bolts, one of which is lockable (key included). Which is nice if you want to stop for something to eat (or some other errand) on the way back from your ride.
The bikes felt very secure during our drive on the highway.

Hollywood Racks SR1 Spare Tire Rack 2-Bike Spare Tire Mount Rack Review

(More customer reviews)We purchased this rack for use on a Chevy Tracker & Jeep Liberty. We wanted something that would be able to slip on/off without alot of tools and be able to be mounted on either SUV that we own without alot of hassle.
Both spare tires have covers and we wanted something that did not require mounting to one of the bolts holding on the spare tire.
This rack has been used several times in the last month and works great.
Another review on here stated they received the rack with just plain arms for sitting the bike on. Ours did come with the plastic cradles and rubber straps shown in the present picture of the rack and which are the newer model. (part# SR1-SA2)
The rack has remained tight on the spare tire ever since the original mounting. The only cons we noticed and this was mentioned on another review was that we did notice a small amount of rust after only a few days on the tightening bolts threads. Other than this, the rack has performed as expected and we would recommend this rack for anyone who has multiple vehicles with outside spare tires and might want to change the rack to the either vehicle without alot of hassle.
